A Riot of Colour and Quality

 

The 619-lot sale has some fine collections, some from individual collectors, artist studio collections and the happy accident of multiple works of an exceptional artist, such as the 10 lots by Kurt Jackson which make a fine group.

 

 

 

Of particular note is the collection from Ian & Ann Head, who over the last 40 years have gathered an outstanding body of paintings, prints and studio pottery. Amongst the 30 plus paintings in this sale from Ian & Ann, are six glorious works by the eternally popular and sought-after artist Mary Fedden, also three equally delightful and collectable works by the St Ives naive artist Bryan Pearce, plus paintings by Peter Joyce, prints by Breon O'Casey and beautiful jewellery by Jessamine Kendall, Bernard Leach's daughter. It is an impressive collection. On the 5^th September Lay's will be holding their inaugural Studio Pottery sale which will contain further exciting ceramics from their collection.

 

 

 

 

There are some 80 lots from a fascinating print collection that have come all the way from a dealer in Connecticut in the USA. Jane Allison specialises in English rural etchings and particularly the work of several Cornish 20^th century artists; including the Lamorna artists Eleanor Hughes and Laura Knight, also Whistler, Turner, Stanley Badmin, Gerald Brockhurst and many other master etchers. There are some exceptional etchings and Lay's are delighted Jane Allinson has entrusted them with so many fine works.

 

 

 

The sale contains so many stunning works and it is difficult to single out a small number for a short article, but Lay's have highlighted some of their favourites, which include an oil by Harold Harvey 'Herding Cows in a Cornish Landscape,' a choice little jewel of a painting, and 'Cottage at Lamorna' by Fred Yates, a joyous, riot of colour with Yates's typical exuberant use of impasto paint. Terry Frost's 'Madron Woodcuts' (lot 79) is also a particularly impressive set of prints.
