A small collection of gorgeous antique jewels from the estate of the Lamorna artist and jeweller Ella Naper will really excite collectors. The pieces were made by her tutor and mentor, the highly regarded Arts & Crafts jeweller Frederick James Partridge (1877-1942). Partridge was from Barnstaple in Devon and studied at the Birmingham School of Art. He taught at the Barnstaple Guild of Metalwork, the Guild of Handicraft at Chipping Camden and the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in London. In 1910, Partridge set up a studio in Dean Street where he designed for Liberty & Co. among others. Examples of his work can be seen at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Ella Naper attended the Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts from 1904 to 1906 where she was taught by Partridge.
The lots, 320 to 324, three brooches, hair ornaments and buttons are believed to have been gifts from Fred to Ella.
Working during the Edwardian era at the beginning of the 20th century, Partridge's jewellery was influenced by the highly fashionable Art Nouveau style. Another Edwardian jewel in the sale, although much more traditional in style, is a real show-stopping brooch/ pendant made by Exeter firm Dupree & Young. It is a delightfully pretty piece with dazzlingly colourful, heart shaped opals garlanded by multiple diamonds. Beautifully presented in its original fitted box, it is sure to inspire some competitive bidding on sale day.
