Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947
Our next sale at our Lanner saleroom is an auction of 311 rare publications, illustrations, ephemera, and curated collections
on August 14th
In this sale you can view thought-provoking works such as lot 115, Jawaharlal Nehru's Glimpses of World History, considered one of the most significant historical works produced by a non Western intellectual in the early 20th century. Written by Jawaharlal Nehru while imprisoned by British colonial authorities, the book takes the form of 196 letters addressed to his daughter, Indira Gandhi, offering a sweeping narrative of global history. It challenges Eurocentric historiography by elevating Asian, African, and Middle Eastern civilisations to equal footing with European ones, anticipating later developments in global and postcolonial historical writing.
Lot 115, Jawaharlal Nehru's Glimpses of World History
The work has been compared in scope to H.G. Wells' Outline of History, yet is praised for its more inclusive worldview. First editions published by Kitabistan in Allahabad are exceedingly scarce, particularly in their original cloth bindings and complete two volume format. Estimate £1,000-2,000.
Lot 257. 'Osman' by Ponting
A wonderful piece of exploration history is lot 257, a toned silver bromide print on board by Herbert George Ponting (1870-1935). Ponting was the photographer to Captain Scott's British Terra Nova Expedition, 1910-13, who captured some of the most enduring images of the golden age of Antarctic exploration.

Pictured top is 'Osman' the lead husky hound. It is a rare photograph with strong provenance as it was originally gifted by Herbert Ponting to his sister, and later given by her to the vendor's father, Peter, who often accompanied his grandmother while she cared for Miss Ponting. Estimate £500-1,000.
Lot 49 James Bond Quad poster
From the extremes of the endurance of British polar explorers, to the lighthearted kitsch of Roger Moore's portrayal of Jame's Bond - surely polar opposites, lot 49 is another of the Book Sale highlights, a highly collectable 'quad' poster for the film, with classic 1973 pop culture imagery. Likely to be a hotly contested lot with an estimate of £400-800. The sale contains over 40 lots of posters including Bruce Lee's Way of the Dragon, Mary Poppins, Pink Floyd and The Exorcist so plenty to see for enthusiasts.
